Assuming a Role versus Being Given a Position

Two choices:

  • Wait to be given a position, or
  • Step up and assume a position.

What would happen if you step up in a union shop?  I have tried it – in a small way – back when I worked in a paint factory in a summer job.  Let’s just say it didn’t go well.  The culture matters.

In an entrepreneurial culture, stepping up is the way to go.  Step up and solve a problem, step up and make a sale.

If you want to grow, find a place that has the culture to support action and independent decision making.

If you are managing a company, build the culture to support people assuming a role, so you don’t have to assign positions.
