What’s the best way to build a moat around your business castle?

moatWhat’s the best way to build a moat around your business castle?

Warren Buffet has said that when investing he looks for businesses that are like castles with wide moats.

If you are lucky enough to be running Google, Microsoft or Coke then you have a castle with a great moat.  If your castle and moat are not quite as established, what is the best way to make your castle and moat stronger?  Building a team of dedicated, motivated people is the answer.

Keep in mind the top ways to build your business team.

Great sales people are rare. Great managers even rarer. Moat building isn’t necessarily the best solution– you might be a great military leader, have an impenetrable wall, be a starving nation no one wants to conquer…. To say build great team–building teams may not be your forte. Answers really depends on who you are, what resources, and how you wish to do this.

A lot of very successful business can also be classified as crooks; so, if we’re going to measure successful businesses, we have to first determine which our goal is. Barnum of Barnum and Bailey and even the modern day version– Trump– says there’s a sucker born every minute (for them to take advantage of). These successful business legends do not live by platitudes.

Building teams is a modern platitude–a generality.

Thanks for the comment. You are right, building teams is a tough, complicated business. There is a growing body of research on how teams come together. I find it interesting reading, though not the same as actually building teams.
